Backyard Homesteading Certification Weekend
Learn Homesteading Skills with Grit Magazine's 2013 Runner Up Homesteaders of the Year!
How we define Homesteading: Produce. Provide. Save. Thrive.
Philosophy
Whether participants are completely new to homesteading, or already on the journey, this course is designed to move participants toward a self-sufficient system of production and "surthrival."
As modern homesteaders, we don't want to simply survive. We want to thrive. By learning to create a closed loop system of energy (even in apartment living), time, enjoyment, and production, modern homesteaders really can reclaim the American Dream of independence and freedom!
The certification courses are designed around a cohort model of learning communities. We believe that learning is facilitated through strong creation of community, shared knowledge, and collective inquiry. The certifications focus on group meals, group projects, and group accommodations.
This course is divided into three themes:
- Animal Husbandry: Basic care of rabbits, bees, chickens
- Food Production: Building and filling raised beds, natural pest and weed control, rotational planting, inter-planting, and starting seedlings
- Creating Homestead Structures: Build a compost system, rain barrel, and worm bin (you will take home a compost bin and worm bin.) Practical fencing and vertical/container gardening
