Certified Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist
The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) / Phlebotomist is responsible for performing both clinical and administrative tasks to ensure efficient clinic operations and high-quality patient care. Under the supervision of the Clinical Director, this position provides direct patient care, phlebotomy services, and clerical support while adhering to all agency policies, confidentiality regulations (HIPAA), and OSHA guidelines.
The CCMA must be comfortable working in a diverse environment and providing care for Persons Living with HIV (PLWH).

Perform patient triage by obtaining vital signs, anthropometric measurements, chief complaints, patient history, medication reconciliation and review the patient chart to ensure documentation is complete and current to facilitate the provider’s visit.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Infection Control & Safety
- Follow all infection control, safety, and OSHA guidelines.
- Maintain logbooks for eyewash stations and clinic refrigerators used for specimen and medication storage.
Perform patient triage by obtaining vital signs, anthropometric measurements, chief complaints, patient history, medication reconciliation and review the patient chart to ensure documentation is complete and current to facilitate the provider’s visit.
- Prepare patients for physical exams and procedures; assist providers as needed.
- Collect, label, and process laboratory specimens (urine, stool, sputum, and blood) according to OSHA and laboratory guidelines.
- Conduct appropriate point-of-care tests (urinalysis, glucose finger stick).
- Provide patients with requisitions, instructions, and information for ancillary tests and procedures ordered by providers.
- Perform CLIA-waived tests accurately and maintain CLIA certification.
- Enter laboratory results into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
- Notify laboratory vendors of missing or invalid test requests.
- Alert providers to critical lab values and document appropriately.
- Greet patients in a professional and courteous manner and manage patient check-in.
- Verify insurance coverage at each visit, schedule appointments, and manage appointment reminders.
- Answer telephone calls promptly; check and return voicemails daily.
- Relay patient phone call information to providers or nursing staff as needed.
- Collect client payments.
- Maintain cleanliness and restock exam rooms and equipment.
- Monitor and manage clinical supply inventory.
- Attend clinic and agency meetings as required.
- Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program with a minimum of 1 year of clinical experience (including phlebotomy skills).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred (American Heart Association).
- Experience with EMR systems preferred, specifically Athena.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Demonstrates initiative and professionalism in the workplace.
- Work primarily in a clinical office setting.
- Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds.
- Occasional carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Standing and/or sitting for extended periods.
- Ability to use a computer for Electronic Health Record documentation.
- Must be able to attend meetings, presentations, and training sessions as needed, and some may require travel.
